The Player

The Player doesn't have any health. Therefore you cannot die in Palia.
You can however be transported back to a 'safe' location if you jump in water or use the /unstuck command.

Creatures

Huntable creatures have varying amounts of health (see table below) that depletes with each hit from an arrow fired from a bow. When a creature's health reaches 0, it drops a bag of loot.

Health Bar

Creatures damaged (or near-missed) by the player or a player's nearby party member display a blue health bar overhead. The health bar may disappear if the distance between the creature and the player grows too large, but reappears when the player or their party shoots at the creature again.

Species-specific Health Interactions

Sernuk, Muujin, and Shmoles do not heal from damage.

Any sernuk or shmole that a player damages (or near-misses) can be looted if another player later fully depletes that creature's health.

Muujin keep their remaining health amount when they hide in a tree, but lose their participation credit information. If a hiding muujin with partially-depleted health is killed later, only players who participated in chopping down the tree and/or shooting the muujin after the tree was chopped will be able to loot it.

Conversely, Chapaas and Ogopuu fully despawn when they dive, and respawned creatures start at full health. Shooting a diving chapaa will damage it and stop it from digging. However, diving ogopuu are immune to damage and cannot be interrupted.

Shooting the mirror image illusions of an Azure Chapaa does not damage the main body.

Arrow Damage Amounts

Damage dealt to creatures depends entirely on arrow type. Bow upgrades only affect aiming and shooting distance, and there are no headshot or critical hit mechanics.

Makeshift Arrow or Slowdown Arrow deals 4 damage.
Standard Arrow deals 6 damage.
Fine Arrow or Dispel Arrow deals 8 damage.
Flare Arrows and Fireworks deal no damage.
