Getting started
Finally, I’ve got more folks to chin wag about all things Peki with! Don’t you worry, Ranchin is tough work, but me an’ the rest of the Daiyas will be there supporting ya! And if ya need a little more help, the Ranchin’ Association put together a helpful guide. I’ll leave a copy for ya by your animal pens!
Delaila · Ranching Guild
Ranching is a skill all about raising animals, collecting their resources, and breeding them. To begin the ranching journey, complete the quest Like a Bird. Afterward, Delaila will give the Player a recipe for the Barn Bell, which teleports the Player to their personal Ranch. There, you'll find roaming areas for animals, a store for supplies and new animals, storage access, and a breeding pen—with a reference book full of “Daiya family wisdom” available as a guide.
Ranching is all about the love and joy of raising creatures through the seasons of their lives. Every animal in Ranching requires regular love and attention, but each species has unique elements that shape how you raise them. All animals are defined by four main qualities: Age, Happiness, Focus, and Items Produced. These values differ by species, changing how quickly they need care and what resources they provide.

Life stages
Each animal species begins life as a baby and ages up through stages until retirement. Growth depends on care, particularly maintaining Happiness (increases with feeding/petting, boosts production rate) and Focus (how well fed they are; low Focus slows production).
- BabyNo produce
Babies are soaking in the world and learning, giving them a chance to generate new traits.
- Young adultProduces
Produces items and can breed.
- AdultProduces
Produces items and can breed.
- ElderProduces
Produces items and can breed.
- VeneratedDonate
Retired. You can donate your animal in return for a treat bag.
Item Production varies by species and is impacted by Happiness, Focus, and whether too many of the same species are kept.
Animals at the Baby or Venerated Age do not produce items or breed.
Happiness, focus and production
- Happiness
- Happiness increases when animals are fed or pet and improves the speed of production. An animal’s happiness will gradually decay over time.
- Focus
- Also thought of as how well fed they are. Focus will drain over time, and an animal that is very hungry (below 25% focus) will produce items more slowly.
- Item Production
- Adult animals will produce specific items based on the species, each with a limit on how many they can carry. Item production is affected by the animals overall happiness as well as how many of the same species you have. If you’re over the species cap, it will slow down production of items.
The animal card
1 · Animal Name Allows for the animal to be marked as a favorite. Shows the name of the animal.
2 · Species Names the species of the animal. Shows the Species Productivity Limit. This limit shows the number of animals of a specific species owned. This is not a hard limit of how many individual animals of the species can be owned, but if the limit is exceeded, the productivity of each animal of this species is reduced.
3 · Age Shows the age of the animal, such as Baby, Young Adult, Adult, Elder, or Venerated.
4 & 5 · Happiness Bar & Focus Bar Shows the current happiness and focus levels. These can be expanded to get more detailed information, such as gain and decay multipliers.
6 · Donation Bar Shows the current donation tier and percentage to the next tier. The donation button will change color based on the Donation Tier.
7 · Production The progress bar shows how close an animal is to producing items. This can be expanded to show the Production Gain Multiplier, which is applied to the bar every in-game day. When this meter reaches 1, an item can be collected. Note: Only Young Adult, Adult, and Elder animals have an Production bar. Babies and Venerated animals do not produce any items.
8 · Abilities Shows any actions that an animal can perform, such as producing items.
9 · Traits A list of characteristics that affect an animal’s appearance, behavior, or production. Traits can be cosmetic or functional.
10 · Status Effects Temporary modifiers that influence an animal’s stats or behavior, either positively or negatively. Status effects can be added by giving the animal Treats.
The ranch and its pens
The Ranch features several pens and facilities to organize and care for your animals. A permissions menu on the animal roster table allows you to prioritize which pen each animal is sent to. Pens will fill according to priority, with a maximum of 10 animals per pen.
| Pen | Element | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Barn | Air | Holds up to 10 adult animals. By default, adults will try to move here first. The Barn also features a cash register, where you can access the Ranching Guild Store to buy animals and treats. A table for the Ranch Inventory is located here, providing a quick overview of your animals. |
| Nursery | Earth | Holds up to 10 baby animals. If more than 10 babies are present, excess animals will be sent to the Barn, then the Water pen, and then the Fire pen. The Nursery cannot hold adults. The Breeding Table is located here, used for breeding animals to produce offspring. |
| North Pen | Water | Holds up to 10 animals. Unlocks at Ranching level 5. |
| East Pen | Fire | Holds up to 10 animals. Unlocks at Ranching level 8. |
Currently, animals can be assigned to: Any pen, Air pen, Water pen, Fire pen.
Ranching with friends
Multiplayer Ranching allows players to invite friends to assist with ranching activities. Visitors can interact with the host's animals, contributing to their care and productivity.
To access another player's ranch, visitors must first travel to their friends' Housing Plot and ring their Barn Bell. Once inside, they can:
Experience gained from petting, feeding, and collecting is shared between both the visitor and the owner. Any other party members (other than the person interacting or the host) will not gain experience. If the host interacts with the animals, the visitors gain no experience, whether or not they are in a party. Additionally, all collected items are automatically sent to the owner's inventory.
Similar to Housing Plot permissions, the Ranch also has its own Plot Settings. Here, the Player can select the security mode of the plot and edit, add, or remove player editor permissions.
The hosting player must be present on the Ranch in order for produce to be gathered by a visitor. However, they can be on their Housing Plot while a visitor feeds and pets their animals.
Visitors can: pet animals, feed animals, gather items produced by animals.
Breeding
Animal traits and breeding bring a whole new layer of discovery to Ranching. Animals can have up to six traits, ranging from cosmetic flourishes to practical effects. No two animals are ever quite the same. There are hundreds of traits to discover, some shared across all species and others unique to each type, waiting to be uncovered as you progress on your ranching journey. Traits can be found as you purchase new animals, emerge randomly as they grow, or through breeding.
Breeding creates opportunities for trait inheritance as well as entirely new surprises! Once an animal reaches adulthood, you can pair it with another animal of the same species. You can breed your animals in the dedicated nursery pen on the west side of your Ranch.
When breeding, a newborn has a chance to inherit traits from each of its parents and may also develop brand-new ones. Of course, when you meet your new baby for the first time, you'll have the joy of giving it a name!
Fair warning, babies are a lot of work, so each parent will need a little bit of time to rest before they're ready to breed again.
The breeding traits (Proud, Quiet, Quirky, Open-Minded) and the Breed Biscuits (see treats) change how likely traits are to pass down, and two negative traits on a baby can combine into a legendary one.
Traits 184
Ranching Traits in Palia describe special characteristics that animals may possess. These traits can affect the appearance, behavior, or productivity of Ranching animals. Traits are divided into two types: cosmetic traits and functional traits.
Each animal can have up to 6 traits. Four of these can be cosmetic (1 Color, 1 Pattern, 1 Sheen, 1 Visual Effect), and one of these can be a cosmetic-scaling trait; these always state that they scale with cosmetics (such as Ages Gracefully).
Cosmetic traits
Cosmetic traits affect an animal’s appearance only and do not impact gameplay systems such as production, happiness, aging, hunger, or breeding. These traits provide visual variety for Ranching animals.
Some functional traits scale based on the number of cosmetic traits an animal has. These traits are listed under functional traits and explicitly state this behavior in their descriptions.
Cosmetic traits are species-specific and vary by animal.
Legendary visual effect traits cannot be produced by using cosmetic cookies or be passed down during breeding. Legendary visual effect traits can be obtained when you buy an animal at the ranching register or through mutations (either when breeding or as an animal ages).
Legendary visual effect traits are immune to Reroll and Oopsie cookies.
Each animal may have up to four cosmetic traits: Color, Pattern, Sheen, Legendary Visual Effect (Aura, Sparkles, Electric).
Each animal's page shows its own colours, patterns and sheens with baby and adult pictures: Peki, Roli, Wolpunny, Trufflet, Ormuu, Bumble, Goobi, Riffroc, Flutterfox, Ferris, Boovar, Akwinduu Thoroughbred, Dawnspur, Phoenixfire Dawnspur, Ignit, Phoenixfire Riffroc, Valhäst, Palcat.
Functional traits
Grouped as the wiki groups them. Tiers of the same trait are folded into one card; "the numbers" are what players have measured (thanks to Cysruleon Silverwind and The Ranching Compendium).

Trait combinations 24
As outlined in The Palian's Guide to Ranching, two negative traits can combine into a Legendary trait if both are present on a baby animal. The original traits are replaced by the new legendary trait. Traits gained later via Trait Treats, Roulette Cookies, or rerolls do not combine. These combinations can occur during breeding or when first acquiring an animal. An animal cannot have two copies of the same legendary trait.
The following table outlines current known trait combinations.
Treats and cookies 37
With so much involved in Ranching, how do you maximize your flock’s potential? Enter treats. These special items offer a variety of benefits and adjustments, giving you new ways to guide and improve your animals. You can feed traits to an animal just like food, as long as another effect of the same type is not already active.
As noted above, you can acquire a number of basic treats from the Ranching store, such as one that lets you rename your animals, or remove a random trait from an animal. More advanced treats can be earned with Skill Medals, which are rewarded through weekly skill challenges. And finally, when donating an animal, you’ll receive a Treat Pack with increasing rewards based on the traits present on your donated animal.
There's many more sweet treats to discover as you build your farm. As one special bonus, if you complete some of the Monthly Bundles during the 0.195 patch, you’ll be able to receive Treat Packs to help jump start your Ranching experience!
Treat Packs (Common Treat Pack,

How do you unlock ranching in Palia?
Ranching is a skill all about raising animals, collecting their resources, and breeding them. To begin the ranching journey, complete the quest Like a Bird. Afterward, Delaila will give the Player a recipe for the Barn Bell, which teleports the Player to their personal Ranch. There, you'll find roaming areas for animals, a store for supplies and new animals, storage access, and a breeding pen—with a reference book full of “Daiya family wisdom” available as a guide.

How many animals fit on the ranch?
The Ranch features several pens and facilities to organize and care for your animals. A permissions menu on the animal roster table allows you to prioritize which pen each animal is sent to. Pens will fill according to priority, with a maximum of 10 animals per pen. Barn (Air): Holds up to 10 adult animals. Nursery (Earth): Holds up to 10 baby animals. North Pen (Water): Holds up to 10 animals. East Pen (Fire): Holds up to 10 animals.
What happens to a venerated animal?
When an animal becomes venerated, they can no longer produce items or breed. At this point, you have the option to donate your animal in return for a treat bag.
Can two negative traits become a good one?
As outlined in The Palian's Guide to Ranching, two negative traits can combine into a Legendary trait if both are present on a baby animal. The original traits are replaced by the new legendary trait. Traits gained later via Trait Treats, Roulette Cookies, or rerolls do not combine. These combinations can occur during breeding or when first acquiring an animal. An animal cannot have two copies of the same legendary trait. Known combinations: Hangry + Malcontent → Clingy; Beepressed + Sensitive Stomach → Content VI; Grumpy + Sensitive Stomach → Content VI; Grumpy + Overstimulated → Content VI; Soft I + Sensitive Stomach → Good Memory; Soft II + Sensitive Stomach → Good Memory; Cuddly + Fast Metabolism I → Happy Medium; Needy + Sensitive Stomach → Hardworking; Cuddly + Sensitive Stomach → Healthy; Fast Metabolism I + Malcontent → Healthy; Fast Metabolism II + Malcontent → Healthy; Hangry + Needy → Healthy; Beepressed + Needy → Mild; Fast Metabolism I + Needy → Mild; Fast Metabolism II + Needy → Mild; Fast Metabolism I + Sensitive Stomach → Mild; Fast Metabolism II + Sensitive Stomach → Mild; Grumpy + Needy → Mild; Beepressed + Cuddly → Motivated; Grumpy + Cuddly → Motivated; Hangry + Sensitive Stomach → Snacky; Cheerful I + Malcontent → Well-Loved I; Cheerful V + Content V → Well-Loved V; Grumpy + Malcontent → Well-Loved VI.
